Models Own Polish for Tans - Shades and Flip Flop*
Models Own have done it AGAIN with another fantabulous new release. This year we've already been treated to Hypergels, Speckled Eggs and Sticky Fingers. Never ones to leave us polishaholics without something new to talk about, Models Own new range, Polish for Tans, is exactly what it says on the tin. The five piece collection of muted or pastel neons are supposed to enhance the look of your golden tan (be it fake or real) and I predict it will be a staple on the beaches in the next few months to come.
In case it's escaped anyone's notice, I am FRIGHTFULLY pale. I've never been tan, either naturally (my skin turns from milk white to beetroot red in the space of about 20 minutes in sunlight without SPF) or artificially (fake tan smells like curry! It's forever a smell I associate with school) so I'm probably not the most ideal testing subject for these polishes as they are designed to showcase a gorgeous tan but I guess I'm here to prove that the polishes aren't JUST for golden goddesses, so pop under the cut to read my thoughts on the polishes and find out how you recreate this simplistic watermelon nail art.
So let's talk about the colours first. I was sent three shades to preview, Flip Flop (L), a pastel neon green, Shades (R), a pastel neon pink coral and Bikini, a pastel neon yellow (not pictured). I'll be featuring Bikini in a separate post but more on that later.
Neons are notoriously hard to apply on the nail without being patchy or sheer and you are often advised to apply such shades with a white base but because the Polish for Tans shades are neon pigments mixed with white polish, they have a creamier finish to the colour without compromising too much of the neon punch of colour. In my opinion, these are not two coat wonders (at least in my experience) but three thin coats should do. The polishes dry to a semi-matte finish so all you have to do is apply top coat for an extra glossy finish.
Shades is a gorgeous pink coral neon which I think will suit a multitude of skin tones, be they pale, tan or darker. It took three coats of the polish to get even coverage so you could do the white base coat step but that is up to you. You'll probably read this in every single post about these polishes but the camera doesn't do justice to the brightness of this colour. In real life, Shades is a deeper neon coral that immediately catches the eye. As soon I saw the shade, I know it would fit exactly into a neon watermelon design and that is what I did.
I used Flip Flop on the tip of the nail to create the rind for the watermelon and this is two coats of the shade. As you can see, it is HIGHLY pigmented in the pictures but is even more so in real life. As Flip Flop is supposedly a muted or pastel neon green, I'd love to compare it with Essie The More the Merrier. Let me know if you'd like to see something like that. Now, onto the how-to of the watermelon mani. I'm by no means the first person to do this design, and I'm not sure who was but here's how I went through the steps, and I'm pretty sure that they are quite universal.
WOWZA is that a long post! I'll do a TL;DR - New Polish for Tans collection, not just for tan people, great neon colours with better application and watermelons are really easy to do on your nails.
Like I mentioned before, I'll be showing off Bikini, the yellow shade from the collection in a separate post as I want to compare it with Luis Lemon, it's counterpart from Models Own Ice Neon collection. I know many people have been asking about how these shades are different to those from the other neon collection so this will be my contribution to the debate :-)

- Apply your base colour until opaque.
- When dry, paint your main green shade across the top of the nail, The thickness of this part is up to you.
- Use a dotter or brush with black nail polish to paint on the watermelon seeds in a regular pattern. You can be more higgildy piggildy if you like but I like them being quite uniform.
- Use your second green shade and with a striper brush, draw wavy lines across the green section of the nail at regular intervals, aim for either 3 or 5 lines per nail (odd numbers look better).
- Using a striper brush with white polish, paint a white line across the nail between the pink and green sections of the nail.
- Wait until dry and seal with top coat.
